In July 2023, the Patent Cooperation Treaty (“PCT”) Assembly appointed the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (“SAIP”) as an International Searching Authority (“ISA”) and an International Preliminary Examining Authority (“IPEA”). SAIP has notified the International Bureau (“IB”) that it will begin its duties as both ISA and IPEA on December 15, 2024.
The appointment allows SAIP to provide patent search and examination services in Arabic, which would be a significant advantage for Arabic speaking applicants and inventors. Familiarity with regional, cultural, and legal nuances leads SAIP to more accurate and efficient patent examinations.
SAIP’s appointment as ISA and IPEA under the also enhances the intellectual property ecosystem both in the country and the broader region. Better access to a more efficient patent system drives the development of new technologies and products, strategically placing Saudi Arabia as a global innovation hub. This robust IP system is also likely to attract foreign investment, further stimulating economic growth and technological advancement in the region.
SAIP’s designation as an ISA and IPEA is anticipated to significantly influence the intellectual property landscape in Saudi Arabia and the wider region.
